Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid just underneath the skin. When the lymphatic system is compromised, either from malformation or damage, inadequate transport of the fluid leads to swelling. Legs and arms are most commonly affected but can affect other body parts. If left untreated, progressive swelling happens with a higher risk of skin changes and infections possible.

Some causes of Lymphedema are:

  • Cancer treatments
  • Surgical or trauma-related
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Infections and genetic malformation of the lymphatic system

Complete Decongestive Therapy includes:

Manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, exercise, skin/nail care
  • Phase 2 – Maintenance phase
