How is this different from GYN exams? An internal assessment is never mandatory, but is beneficial as it helps the PT visualize and truly understand what the muscles of the pelvic floor are doing in real time. This differs from a GYN assessment as PTs exam the musculature and how the pelvic floor coordinates (or not) during functional activities. There are no instruments or tools inserted into the vaginal canal other than one gloved finger.

While the internal pelvic exam is the gold standard for exams and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions, it is never a mandatory procedure. If you choose to forego the internal exam, you will still be able to receive treatment from your PT based on an external exam.

*consent is of utmost importance and will be asked continually throughout the exam with NO being an option at any point
